On Saturday night, the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir opened a new concert season for the Barrie Concert Association at Collier Street United Church.
Under the expert direction of William Woloschuk and skilful piano accompaniment of Matthew Coons, the choir delighted a full house with beautiful melodies, rich harmonies and so much heart.
Since 1995, the choir has serenaded audiences with the "achingly beautiful songs of the mountains and valleys of Wales." But to my surprise, their repertoire also straddled other traditions including Canadian folk, spirituals, operatic arias, show tunes and pop.
The choir softened hearts with their clear Welsh diction, gentle harmonies and sensitive renditions of traditional Welsh tunes, but also of classics such as Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth, Lauridsen’s Sure on This Shining Night and folksy modern favourites such as We Rise Again and Lightfoot’s Song for a Winter’s Night.
They thrilled the audience in rousing "anthems" such as I Dreamed a Dream and You Raise Me Up.
And to our complete surprise, this Welsh male voice choir entertained us with humour and a flair for the dramatic as the audience eagerly joined in the "baseball version" of Sweet Caroline.
"So good … so good," a definite crowd pleaser.
Throughout the concert, I was struck by the choir’s bond, so evident in the joy on their faces and delight in each other’s talents. They even made the invitation for others to audition and join them. What Would I Do Without My Music was a lovely tune sung so confidently and almost as a personal anthem for the choir … "to give me hope so I can carry on."
The choir’s finale, Lean on Me/We Shall Overcome, began in unison, then grew in its soulful gospel sound as the audience clapped to its catchy rhythms and embraced its powerful message of community and mutual support.
Their message is simple: "the things we all share far outweigh our differences."
My Tribute to William Woloschuk -
William Woloschuk shines with his ability to empower the “Welsh soul” and his beloved Ukrainian heritage in the TWMVC performances.
Although I am not on Facebook, I want to thank William for giving me the chance to showcase the talents of the TWMVC to numerous appreciative audiences during my time as Publicity Manager.
The first time I heard TWMVC, I was not impressed. But less than six months later, the transformation under William’s leadership genuinely amazed me. Soon after, I was invited to take on the role of Publicity Manager for TWMVC.
Some of my most cherished memories include the “100 Voice Concert” celebrating the Centennial of Dewi Sant Welsh United Church, the only Welsh church in Canada; a private “After Glow” with Bryn Terfel, Patron of the TWMVC, which led to a performance with Bryn at Carnegie Hall; entertaining audiences with Christopher Thomas as MC as well as narrating “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” and other classics; then culminating in the production and release of "Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir Live at Glenn Gould Studio" with Juno Award winner, Shannon Mercer, for the 15th Anniversary Gala Concert at St. Anne’s Anglican Church, beneath the dome adorned with the only religious paintings by Canada’s "Group of Seven" artists, now sadly gone. Truly, moments to treasure.
Just some of the highlights of my time working with the TWMVC - a group of tremendous gentlemen men under William Woloschuk as their Director of Music, providing numerous opportunities for others to delight in their musical abilities for "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
William was truly an extraordinary music director. “People may forget what you said, people may forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Now, as William embarks on new ventures, I continue to thank God for the countless blessings that knowing him brought into our lives, especially mine.
May he keep enjoying the richness of his remarkable legacy, which has inspired and uplifted us through his generous spirit and the sharing of his God-given musical talents.

The Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir concert was such a memorable and unforgettable event for every concert goer. The Finns were especially touched and grateful for the singing of Finlandia in Finnish which was a profound emotional and cultural experience to all of us. Your concert was and will be one of the very special highlights of Agricola's 95th anniversary year. I invited my neighbour, Ena Moffat (95 years young in July), who is a graduate from Royal Academy of Music in London, England, to join me as my concert guest. Ena could not stop talking and raving about your magnificent performance all evening after the concert. Ena was so impressed by your choir, choir conductor and the accompanist. Obviously knowing Ena's musical background you can imagine how taken and touched she was about Matthew Coons's performance. He is an amazing pianist and organist. The same applies to your conductor and artistic director William Woloschuk who puts his heart and soul into conducting the magnificent group of your talented male singers.
On behalf of the Agricola congregation please convey our special thank you and best wishes to all your choir members. I would also like to wish you the best of luck on your upcoming concert tour to Eastern Canada in July.
Many thanks. We very much look forward to listening to your singing at Agricola soon again.
Warm regards

My husband and I attended the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir at Knox Presbyterian Church, Waterloo yesterday. We were blown away by the beauty of their singing. We had thought everything would be in Welsh but actually a bit more than half was in English. The men sang so beautifully, enunciating every word clearly and exactly together so there was no trouble hearing the words. There were a lot of humorous comments made by the various speakers as they introduced the next few pieces. The pianist/organist was incredible. It was amazing watching his fingers flying over the keys or his feet moving swiftly on the organ foot pedals. The conductor was superb, mouthing all the words while his hands directed various sections at once. It was truly a wonderful afternoon. We will hope to have an opportunity to see this group again.
WOW!!! I really don't know what to say other than I was blown away by the incredible talent and entertainment I witnessed at the concert on Sunday in Wasaga Beach. I had never seen a Welsh men's choir before and the level of discipline, combined with humour and skill, was something to truly witness. What a huge sold-out and thoroughly entertained audience. I bet they're all still smiling days after the show. The MC had me crying with laughter, while the choristers gave me goose bumps from head-to-toe and the soloists thrilled me with their beautiful voices. The conductor and pianist are so entertaining to watch! PLEASE, PLEASE, come back next year!!!
I’ve never heard a choir so perfectly synchronized that I can hear every word you’re all singing. Would love to have heard We Rise Again, and to belt out Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah with you, if they were performed. But everything you chose was lovely. The Dylan Thomas piece from Under Milk Wood was beautiful and evocative.
Thank you for your marvellous work at your recent concert in Newmarket. I especially enjoyed “We Need a Little Christmas”. Somehow the blend of your voices was especially sweet on that one or perhaps it was the arrangement that was so wonderful. Thank you again. What an amazing accompanist and performer your Matthew is. He brought such joy to the whole event. Wishing you all the very best.
We attended the Toronto Welsh Men’s concert in Collingwood last night. It was a lovely location by the water with great views. It was a blast with good jokes, great solos and beautiful singing. Some songs evoked emotions in a good way. Would love to see them again and don’t miss a concert if you get the chance.
We enjoyed your concert tonight in Collingwood! The choir is very professional - no dangling consonants. A lovely mix of pieces perfect for a summer evening.
Come again soon!
We really enjoyed your concert in London on Saturday June 1, 2024 .
What a great performance!!
Would love to be able to have your incredible choir perform at our church possibly in the future, what great entertainment for Essex County that would be!
Thank you again for sharing all your talents!
Blessings to all!

Our group of 5 (including one Welsh visitor!) attended your performance in Exeter this past Sunday. We all enjoyed the performance very, very much.
We must commend all the performers - singing so well, in a hot church, in suits and bow ties! Your MC, soloists, guitar, drums and accompanist were all great. Special mention to Matthew Coons - he was amazing. We had a wonderful time. Thank you for keeping your heritage alive and sharing it with all of us.
Thank you for providing the audience at Exeter United Church with a wonderful concert this past Sunday. You could tell from the enthusiastic applause that every song was appreciated. The program was varied and the delivery was always professional. Thank you for sharing your talents many talents with us.
Thank you so much for the amazing performance today at Exeter United Church, so much talent and so much enthusiasm. My mom and dad really enjoyed it as well. Thank you for doing what you do! We hope to see you again sometime.
Words are hard to find that adequately describe the concert I experienced today by the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir. It lifted my spirits, brought me to tears, gave me goosebumps and cleared the heavy sadness I've been feeling lately from my heart and the confused fog from my mind. Listening to these amazing voices so expertly lead helped me feel a bit more hopeful for this world. The accompanist was amazing and gave it his all, as did all the choir members. They certainly enjoy what they are doing. Lovely way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon. Thank you so much.
I saw your concert at St Philips On The Hill Anglican Chruch in Unionville, Ontario, on May 4, 2024. This was the best $40 that I have spent in a long time!! The concert was amazing. The song choices, the singing, the harmonies, the pianist, and the conductor were all amazing. Very animated and professional. I especially enjoyed the choir's performance and antics while performing Sweet Caroline! "Bah, bah, bah! So Good!"
Your Holiday Concert was a most enjoyable event for Joanne, myself and our two very dear Italian friends Rino and Nancy. We were truly impressed by the absolute control of your conductor over so many voices, in perfect harmonious dynamics. The discipline and attentiveness from each member of the choir, is a direct reflection of the professional quality of your choir. The accompanist was truly awesome and surely an accomplished musician. The audience was literally mesmerized. Congratulations to all for an outstanding performance.
Choosing the Toronto Welsh Choir (at Stratford Symphony Orchestra) for my birthday (79th) was a really wonderful choice. Because we forgot our tickets… we had to sit off to the side. We were next to the Timpanies and the harp, as well as the choir. The sound was bloody mind blowing. When you're that close, it's so immersive. That choir is just incredible. They did “Men of Harlech”, which was really rousing. Mary tells me her favourite was “Finlandia”. They performed that at the very end of the concert. The Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir singers are just superb!!
Congratulations to the TWMVC for a great Christmas Concert!! We loved that the program included pieces like Finlandia and “Lean on Me” that are not (at least for us) usually associated with Christmas but are very inspiring and appropriate for this time of the year. The performance was fabulous! Every member of the Choir exudes energy and passion. The Conductor made it all happen harmoniously and he was so engaging. It is obvious that the Choir enjoys performing the program as much as the audience loved hearing it. Thank you for getting us into the spirit of the season!!

I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to you and all the members
of the Toronto Welsh Choir! The Program you presented to our audience was nothing short of “Superb”. As everyone exited the Church there were many Kudos. They were all so excited to have attended the evening and wanted to know when you are coming back. The piano interludes were a real treat! The sounds of these voices resonating in our church will not be soon forgotten.
Thank you again
