A Message from our President

(Welsh Translation … Cyfieithiad Cymraeg)

Graham Parker (President)

Hello,

As a member of the Choir since its inception in 1995 and its President since 2010, I can honestly say that it has been an honour and privilege to have watched and participated in its growth and progression through the years. With a small membership of choristers of mainly Welsh origin at the outset, wearing just white shirts with matching ties as a uniform, the membership grew quite quickly with diversity as a key element. Today we use three different uniforms, depending on the occasion and boast a membership which spans many cultures. With Welsh still rooted at the core, the repertoire has also grown to also include such languages as Latin, French, Italian, Ukrainian, Afrikaans and of course, English imparted by way of operas, folk songs, Canadian traditional, pop, musicals and more. In the Welsh tradition, all songs are “off book” ie. without the use of sheet music.

The Choir has also grown by way of reputation, delighting audiences from Ontario to Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, some northern U.S. states and the U.K. with additional travel plans always in the works. It has performed at such diverse venues as Carnegie Hall supporting world renowned Welsh baritone, Bryn Terfel, at Roy Thomson Hall as part of the 2008 Olympic bid and in its early days was a finalist in the CBC’s Choral Festival. So you can tell very quickly that to be a member becomes a lifetimes journey.

I encourage you to attend one of our concerts, meet the members, attend an afterglow (usually held at a local pub!!) and experience the sheer joy of our musicality. Consider becoming a member for which age is not a barrier. At one point our youngest member was 16 and our oldest 96 years of age.

Singing is reportedly good for ones’ health as are laughter and having fun, all of which combine when you either listen to us live or on one of our many CD’s or download songs from one of the digital platforms. Better still, become a member!

Thank you and best wishes,

Graham Parker
President
TWMVC

A Message from our Artistic Director

WILLIAM WOLOSCHUK
(Artistic Director)

The role of Music Director is a very important one. Week in, week out, over many years, gradually developing and working with various personalities all to create a unified voice and identity. Its role is underscored by a sense of musical priority and perspective, a deep understanding of one another and the music we perform, a trust and exchange with the public. It is a kind of work where the goal is never the performance of the year but the gradual crescendo and certain construction of something that can only be fully appreciated with hindsight.

I cannot help but feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this amazing group of singers and organization. As an open, non-auditioned choir, and Welsh “hwyl” in our step, the TWMVC is built on the core philosophy that music is a gift for everyone. At the same time, our mission of engaging and enriching our diverse communities through high-quality, memorable performances is something we all take very seriously, and I am constantly impressed by the capacity of our singers to rise to the occasion, and live up to the challenges set before them. Our collective hope is that our songs leave you with a mark — one that has touched your heart, mind or spirit, and stays with you forever. As we prepare a variety of choral song year over year, we genuinely hope you continue to support us and share your experience of your time with the choir with your friends and neighbours.

Together, let’s continue to keep the beat don’t ever let it end.

William Woloschuk

BASIC CHOIR INFORMATION

The TWMVC is always welcoming new members from the GTA and surrounding regions. Over 50% of our choir come from outside the Welsh community. Our ranks have members from all nationalities and walks of life who love to sing and be a part of something that brings joy to others. We invite you to come and spend an evening with us!

MONTHLY OPEN REHEARSAL NIGHTS

Please drop in at a rehearsal, to be inspired by our singers, the music and the camaraderie. Open rehearsal nights take place on the last Wednesday of the month during our regular season (September – May). Male singers and curious onlookers are welcome, and you can socialize with the guys over a drink afterwards.

“I often come to choir tired and leave feeling rejuvenated. I love the musical workout and the friendships that I have made over the years.” Ed Golem, Member since 2000

WEEKLY REHEARSALS

Rehearsals take place on Wednesdays September-May 7.30-9.30pm at Agricola Finnish Lutheran Church, 25 Old York Mills Rd, North York. See the map below for directions. Our rehearsal hall is not far from Yonge & Hwy 401, free parking, and steps from York Mills TTC. New members receive a warm Welsh Croeso (Welcome).

YOUR COMMITMENT

Choir members are asked to attend a minimum of 75% of all rehearsals and concerts within a 4-month period and must attend 2 out of 3 rehearsals prior to a scheduled concert engagement in order to perform on stage. This allows singing members to accommodate personal and work commitments outside of the choir whilst ensuring that the choir maintains high performance standards and professionalism for our concert engagements. The choir performance dress code is black tux (with seasonal black or red bowtie and cummerbund) and a custom green jacket with emblem which can be purchased locally (with black pants).

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE

Members are asked to pay a small annual membership fee to help offset the costs for music, hall rental and other miscellaneous expenses. Concert appearances, music sales and donations round off our additional annual operating expenses.

“The TWMVC choir was the change I was looking for. We have fun, make a point of getting to know each other, and have concerts that entertain as well as give a high quality musical experience. We also listen to ideas from members, learn from other choirs and encourage local talent to participate in our concerts. We are a choir, a community and fun group of like minded guys.” Jim Osborne, Member since 2013.

SUMMER HIATUS

The choir takes a summer break from rehearsals and concerts for the months of July and August each year. Rehearsals resume the first week in September.

“Singing with the TWMVC provides some wonderful opportunities. The most memorable for me was performing at Carnegie Hall in September 2008 with 425 other men on-stage. The first note from the 90 or so basses standing behind me left me thunder-struck! The thrill of performing with these guys provides the same buzz and adrenaline rush as wind-surfing or riding my motor-cycle and the friendships developed make the Choir an unbeatable combination.” Peter Andrews, Member since 2002

HOW BIG IS THE CHOIR?

Our choir averages 40-50 volunteer singing members, and we engage an Artistic Director and Accompanist. Our Board of Directors is made up of 10 volunteer positions that draws from our members and we are very fortunate to have a group of active supporters and spouses who assist at concerts and choir functions.

“Seeing the smiling faces and hearing the applause and accolades after our concerts, I know we are reaching people and helping them forget their troubles through our music and joy of singing.” Glenn Hall, Member since 2011

MUSIC/REPERTOIRE

Only 25% of our repertoire is performed in Welsh, although you are not required to know or learn the language. The other 75% of music performed at concerts encompasses a variety of styles, tempos and languages.

“Rehearsals on Wednesday nights gives me something to look forward to every week (above and beyond the weekend)!” Jaryd Hunter, Member since 2013

REHEARSAL TOOLS

Most of our members do not read music. The choir has a comprehensive library of mp3 recordings to help you learn your notes and the harmonies for the tenor1, tenor2, baritone or bass sections. Everyone helps one another, and there is always an opportunity to socialize with the guys at the local pub after rehearsal.

“Having never been in a choir before, I was a little apprehensive going to my first rehearsal, but everyone was very welcoming, and within a few months I was hooked. Like many group activities, choral singing is a case of the sum being greater than the component parts, and I find it genuinely uplifting. As a member of the TWMVC you’re also helping to raise money for good causes, and playing an active part in Toronto’s diverse music scene.”
Huw Kerley, Member since 2012
